Examples of being Bilingual, Bicultural, and both Bilingual and Bicultural
Being Bilingual: Being bilingual is defined as a person who is able to speak two languages (in some cases fluently but with some accent). An example would be a high school student who goes weekly to a language institution to learn to speak French (his native language is Spanish). The learning process in this situation is usually slower because the student will use French only for occasions that warrant it while his or her native language (in this case Spanish) will be used on a daily basis. The student will also have an accent due to the fact that during the course he/she will not have any contact with native speakers of French and therefore his/her accent will be somewhat noticeable.
Being Bicultural: First of all, being bicultural is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as the action of belonging to, representing, or understanding two different cultures. That said, I will give a hypothetical example:
Alberto Ramirez is a 15-year-old teenager who currently lives in the United Kingdom (UK) and whose parents are of Ecuadorian descent. In his childhood Alberto lived in the city of Quito - Ecuador, he understands and speaks Spanish well, however, in his teenage years his parents had to move out with him to the UK because of their job. This means that Alberto will arrive in an English-speaking country knowing absolutely nothing of the foreign language. He will see not only English as a subject in his new school, but also in subjects such as mathematics, history, biology, etc. .... and therefore his learning level in English will be very noticeable and fast because Alberto will have to speak that language in order to socialize on a daily basis. Culture factor is also another very important factor, in this case Alberto will adapt to the British culture without forgetting his Ecuadorian roots, i.e. he can speak Spanish with his parents at home and speak English with his friends at school. He will also adopt the British accent without forgetting Spanish one.
